More on pest control
When something is chewing your roses, sucking the life out of your hedge or eating your vegie patch overnight, the first job is to identify the pest correctly. The wrong treatment is worse than no treatment — it kills beneficial predators that would have done the job for you. JJ identifies the pest, then chooses the lightest treatment that will actually work.
The most common pests in Eastern Suburbs gardens are aphids on rose tips, scale on citrus and ornamentals, two-spotted mite on hedges through hot weather, and caterpillars on brassicas. JJ treats each one differently. Aphids often clear with a strong hose blast and a single insecticidal soap follow-up. Scale gets a targeted oil spray. Mite needs a wettable sulphur or a predator-mite release. Caterpillars get an organic Bt (bacillus) treatment that is safe for pollinators.
JJ does not handle building pests — termites, rats, possums in roof spaces, white ants — those are licensed pest control jobs and JJ will refer you to a specialist. What JJ does handle is everything that lives outside on your plants, with a bias toward the lightest, most environmentally sensible treatment that actually solves the problem.
How JJ does it
- 1
Identify the pest
Visual inspection plus a check of the underside of leaves and the soil around the base of the plant.
- 2
Assess the damage
Decide whether it is bad enough to warrant intervention or whether a beneficial predator will sort it.
- 3
Targeted treatment
Lightest possible treatment that works — physical removal, insecticidal soap, oil spray or a targeted organic option.
- 4
Prevention advice
Brief on what attracted the pest and how to set up the garden so it does not come straight back.
