Pruning is the single most undervalued bit of garden work. Cut a rose properly in winter and you get armfuls of flowers in spring. Cut a fruit tree at the right angle and you double the crop. Cut a native at the wrong time and you lose the next season of flowers entirely. JJ understands the difference and prunes every plant on its own clock, not a generic schedule.

Roses get cut hard in late June or early July, down to clean outward-facing buds, with all the spindly internal growth removed. Apple, pear and stone fruit get a structural prune in winter and a summer tip prune to control vigour. Natives like grevilleas and callistemon get a light trim straight after flowering — never hard pruned, which kills them.
