What garden maintenance costs in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs
Most gardeners will not give you a number until they have been out. Fair enough — but you still want a ballpark before you pick up the phone. Here are the ranges most properties around Box Hill, Doncaster and Ringwood fall into, and what actually moves the price.
Hourly work
$70 – $95 per hour
Hedging, pruning, weeding and clean-ups, where scope varies job to job.
Regular mowing
Priced per visit
A fixed number per visit, so you know exactly what each week or fortnight costs.
Quotes
Free, no callout fee
JJ comes out, looks at the job and gives you a fixed price before starting.
How to read these numbers
Every figure below is a typical market range for Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs as at August 2026, not a quote. Two houses on the same street can price differently once you factor in lawn size, gate access, slope and how long it has been since the last visit. Use them to sanity-check any quote you get — including JJ’s.
Lawn mowing prices
Most mowing is quoted per visit rather than per hour, because the job is predictable once JJ has seen the property. Lawn size, slope, gate access and how long it has been since the last cut are what move the number.
Small lawn / townhouse courtyard
$50 – $70
per visit
Up to roughly 200 m² of lawn. Mow, edge, line-trim and clippings removed.

+$40 – $120
one-off surcharge
A lawn that has not been cut in months takes two passes and produces far more green waste. It only applies to the first visit.

Hedge trimming and pruning
Hedging is usually charged hourly because the shape, height and species change how long it takes. Small, regular hedges are often quoted as a flat visit price once JJ knows them.
Hedge trimming
$70 – $95
per hour
Includes shaping, clean-up and taking every cutting away. Most single hedges are 1 – 3 hours.

$130 – $250
per visit
A typical one-fence-line hedge on a regular trim schedule.

$70 – $95

Garden clean-ups and one-off jobs
Clean-ups are quoted on site, because the only honest way to price an overgrown garden is to look at it. As a rough guide, most jobs land in these bands.
Half-day tidy
$300 – $450
approx. 4 hours
Mow, edge, weed the front beds, light prune. Enough to reset a garden that has slipped a bit.
More on this service →Full-day clean-up
$600 – $850
approx. 8 hours
The usual pre-sale, end-of-lease or "we have let it go" job on a standard block.

Heavily overgrown properties, deceased estates, or anything needing staged work.
More on this service →Green waste removal

What is always included
The quickest way to compare two quotes is to check what each one leaves out. With JJ, these are never extras:

- Line-trimming the spots a mower cannot reach
- Paths and patios blown clean before he leaves
- All clippings and green waste taken away
- A fixed price agreed before work starts

Pricing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Melbourne?
For a standard suburban block across Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, expect roughly $70 to $110 per visit for a mow that includes edging, line-trimming and removal of all clippings. Small townhouse lawns start around $50. Large or awkward blocks run higher. Those are typical market ranges — JJ quotes your property for free before any work starts.Do you charge by the hour or by the job?
Both, depending on the work. Regular mowing is quoted per visit so you know exactly what each week costs. Hedging, pruning, weeding and clean-ups are usually hourly, at roughly $70 to $95 per hour, because the scope varies far more. Whichever applies, you get the price before JJ starts. Is there a callout fee?
No. Quotes are free and there is no charge for JJ coming out to look at the job. You are not committed to anything by getting a price. Is there a minimum charge?
In practice the smallest jobs work out around the $50 to $70 mark, because that covers travel, setup and green waste disposal. If you have something smaller, it is usually cheaper to bundle it into a visit JJ is already making to your street.Do you offer a discount for regular visits?
Regular clients pay less per visit than one-off jobs, because the garden never gets away and each visit is quicker. Weekly and fortnightly schedules are the best value. There is no lock-in contract either way.How does that compare to Jim’s Mowing and the franchises?
Franchise operators generally quote in a similar band, with the difference being who turns up. JJ is a sole trader — the person who quotes the job is the person who does it, every visit, and there is no franchise fee built into the price. Compare quotes on what is actually included: edging, line-trimming and green waste removal are standard with JJ, and are sometimes extras elsewhere. What is included in the price?
Every mowing visit includes edging along paths and beds, line-trimming the spots a mower cannot reach, blowing paths and patios clean, and taking all clippings away. No green pile is left behind, and there is no separate disposal charge on a standard job.How do I pay?
Bank transfer once the work is done. An invoice with payment details is sent on the day. No deposit is needed for regular maintenance work.
