What Does a Garden Clean-Up Cost in Melbourne?
· By Justus

A one-off garden clean-up is the hardest garden job to price over the phone, because "the garden has gotten away from us" covers everything from a fortnight of missed mowing to two years of neglect. The honest answer is that it is quoted on site. The useful answer is that most jobs across Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs land in one of three bands.
A half-day tidy runs roughly $300 to $450 and covers about four hours. That is typically a mow and edge, weeding the front beds, a light prune to open up paths and windows, and clearing the waste. It suits a garden that has slipped rather than collapsed — the sort of thing that happens over one busy season.
A full-day clean-up runs roughly $600 to $850. This is the standard pre-sale, end-of-lease or "we have let it go" job on a normal suburban block. Everything in the half-day scope, plus proper hedge work, cutting back overgrown shrubs, clearing along fence lines, and usually two or three trailer loads of green waste.
Beyond that you are into multi-day territory, which has to be quoted on site. Heavily overgrown properties, deceased estates and rentals that have been neglected for years are all in this group. The variable is rarely the mowing — it is the volume of green waste and how far it has to be carried to the trailer.
Four things move the price more than anything else. Access is the big one: a property where the trailer can back up to the gate is dramatically cheaper than one where every barrow load crosses a nature strip and goes up a driveway. Green waste volume is second, because disposal is charged by load. Third is what is actually in the growth — blackberry, ivy and woody regrowth take far longer than long grass. Fourth is whether anything needs a second visit to finish properly.
Green waste removal is the line item people get caught by. Plenty of cheap quotes are cheap because the waste stays on site in a pile, which leaves you with a second problem and often a second bill. JJ includes removal in quoted clean-up work. If you are comparing quotes, that is the first thing to check.
Timing matters if the clean-up is for a sale. Book the work one to two weeks before the photo shoot rather than before the listing date. A garden that has just been cut back hard looks shocked in photos; a week of regrowth makes it look maintained. Marketing images are the first inspection now, and they are worth planning around.
For end-of-lease work, the standard to aim for is the condition report rather than perfection. Mow, edge, weed, cut back what has overgrown and remove everything. That is what agents check, and it is what stops the garden being the reason a bond gets held.
If the property is genuinely overwhelming, staging it is usually cheaper than one heroic day. Doing the front yard first buys immediate presentation, and the back can follow a fortnight later. JJ will tell you if staging makes financial sense rather than quoting one large number.
One last thing worth knowing: a clean-up is almost always more expensive than the maintenance that would have prevented it. Once a garden is reset, a fortnightly mow keeps it there for a fraction of what the reset cost. Most one-off clean-up clients end up on a regular schedule for exactly that reason.
